Showdown at Mackey: Wisconsin Faces #15 Purdue with a Friday Bye on the Line
Can the Badgers overcome a potentially shorthanded frontcourt to secure their first Top-4 Big Ten seed since 2022?

There is no more math left to do after this. The Wisconsin Badgers (21-9, 13-6 B1G) head to West Lafayette on Saturday for an afternoon showdown with the No. 15 Purdue Boilermakers. Fresh off a record-breaking 33-point dismantling of Maryland, the Badgers are hunting for their 22nd win and a top-4 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
However, playing at Mackey Arena is a different beast entirely. Purdue is looking to protect its home floor and solidify its own seeding, creating a potentially loud and wild environment for a Wisconsin team that may be playing shorthanded. Greg Gard, who now ranks 18th on the Big Ten’s all-time wins list, will need every bit of his 61.0% conference win percentage to navigate this one.

Players to Watch
Wisconsin
Nick Boyd (G, Sr.): Boyd is officially in the history books, currently sitting at 11th on the school’s single-season scoring list with 601 points. He needs to be a primary engine against Purdue’s perimeter pressure. You can bet Wisconsin’s leading scorer will have an impact on the game.
Braeden Carrington (G, Sr.): The senior guard is officially on fire, shooting a team-high 43% from three-point range. Coming off an 18-point Senior Day performance, Carrington is absolutely going to be a factor for the Badgers coming off the bench.
John Blackwell (G, Jr.): Now 20th on Wisconsin’s all-time scoring list after passing Jon Leuer, Blackwell’s ability to get to the rim and draw fouls will be vital in a game where whistles are often hard to come by in West Lafayette. Blackwell is working his way back into a groove after going through a bit of a slump the past couple of weeks.
Purdue
Braden Smith (G, Sr.): The engine of the Boilermaker offense. Now a veteran leader, Smith’s elite passing and improved mid-range game make him the most dangerous floor general in the conference.
Fletcher Loyer (G, Sr.): A certified Badger-killer in the past. If he gets clean looks early, Mackey Arena will become a very loud place very quickly.
Trey Kaufman-Renn (F, Sr.): With Wisconsin’s interior depth in question, Kaufman-Renn’s physical post play will be the primary test for the Badgers’ frontline.
Storylines to Watch
1. Life Without Nolan Winter?
The biggest cloud over this game is the health of 7-footer Nolan Winter. After suffering what appeared to be a serious ankle injury late in the Maryland game, Winter’s availability is the biggest question mark for the team. On Thursday, CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported that Winter was ‘day-to-day,’ but with postseason play starting next week, should the Badgers risk making the injury worse by playing him too soon?
Without him, Wisconsin loses its primary rim protector and a floor-spacer who allows the offense to breathe. Expect Austin Rapp, who hit double figures for the 11th time this season against Maryland, to see a significant uptick in minutes against Purdue’s physical frontcourt.
2. The Transition Game
In the win over Maryland, Wisconsin outscored the Terps 25-0 in fast-break points, a Gard-era record. However, Purdue does a nice job of limiting transition opportunities by crashing the offensive glass and retreating quickly. If Wisconsin can’t get easy buckets in the open floor, they’ll have to rely on their half-court offense—a unit that is 12-1 when shooting 40% or better from deep.
