The college football transfer portal opens on January 2nd, but like everything in college football, that doesn’t stop teams and players from participating before it officially opens. The Wisconsin football team has already had double-digit players announce that they will hit the portal when it opens.

You can keep up with all of the portal additions and departures on The Badger Backer Portal Tracker.

You can bet the coaching staff already has an idea of which players they want to target, whether they are in the portal or not, with one position getting some real attention.

A new addition to the staff also brings a potential change in high school targets for the 2027 class and beyond.

Let’s take a look at the latest happenings in Wisconsin recruiting.

Wisconsin makes a flurry of offers to offensive linemen

The Badgers relieved AJ Blazek of his duties as the offensive line coach just last week. They already hired his replacement in Eric Mateos, the former Arkansas Razorbacks offensive line coach who has a history with Wisconsin offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes.

The new Badgers coach hasn’t wasted any time hitting the recruiting trail, making multiple offers to offensive linemen in the 2027 class. Since he has officially become the Badgers’ OL coach, Mateos has offered the following recruits:

  • IOL Kyler Kuhn (2027) - 4-star - Kansas City, MO

  • IOL Peyton Miller (2027) - 4-star - Anna, TX

  • IOL Ismael Camara (2027)- 4-star - Gilmer, TX

  • IOL Keyon Hemphill-Woods (2027) - 3-star - Columbus, TX

  • OT Cameron Wagner (2027) - 4-star - Saint Joseph, IL

You can tell that Mateos has a presence recruiting in Texas, as three of the five offers he has extended have been to prospects from the state. Kuhn is a player whom he has recruited hard while at Arkansas.

Mateos is coming out swinging, going after some of the top players in the country.

Could the Badgers pursue a top-tier quarterback in the transfer portal?

As of right now, the Badgers still have freshman quarterback Carter Smith on their roster heading into next season. But did he show enough to warrant the starting spot next season?
