Shawn Eichorst Named Wisconsin’s New Athletic Director
The former Badger executive, Nebraska and Miami AD, and Texas COO returns home to guide Wisconsin through the wild-west landscape of modern college sports.
The search is over, and interim Chancellor Eric M. Wilcots didn’t have to look far past the program’s roots to find the next leader of Wisconsin Athletics.
Today, UW-Madison officially announced that Shawn Eichorst has been appointed as the Badgers’ new Director of Athletics. Eichorst takes over the permanent mantle following the departure of Chris McIntosh and a steadying interim stretch by Marcus Sedberry.
For Eichorst, this isn’t just a massive career move—it’s a homecoming. A native of Lone Rock, Wisconsin, and a former all-conference football player at UW-Whitewater, Eichorst spent five years rising through the executive ranks of Wisconsin Athletics from 2006 to 2011 before taking over major athletic departments nationwide.
An SEC Blueprint Comes to Madison
While the “homegrown” narrative is a great bonus for the fanbase, it’s Eichorst’s resume over the last eight years that makes this an under-the-radar hire for Wisconsin.
Since 2018, Eichorst has served as the Deputy Athletic Director and Chief Operating Officer at the University of Texas-Austin. During his tenure on the Forty Acres, Texas achieved a staggering level of success. Most notably, Eichorst played a vital, central role in negotiating and executing the Longhorns’ massive transition from the Big 12 to the SEC.
While at Texas, Eichorst handled day-to-day operations for a department that won 17 NCAA Championships and captured the prestigious Learfield Directors’ Cup five out of the last six years. As Texas Football Head Coach Steve Sarkisian noted:
“He is someone that is on top of his job and all that’s going on in the ever-changing landscape of college athletics. He’s passionate about college football, always accessible, supportive and enjoyable to work with. We’ll miss him here, but I have no doubt he’ll continue to have tremendous success leading the athletics department at Wisconsin.”
Navigating the NIL and Realignment Storms
College sports are in an unprecedented state of flux. The explosive growth of NIL collectives, impending revenue-sharing models, and ruthless conference realignments have fundamentally rewritten the playbook. Wisconsin chose a leader with a proven track record of steering massive ships through these exact tectonic shifts.
Beyond his administrative success at Texas, Eichorst brings a legal background to Camp Randall. He also brings Power Four AD experience from his previous stints leading Nebraska (2012–2017) and Miami (2011–2012).
His appointment has already drawn praise from familiar faces in the department who remember his first stint in Madison, including Men’s Basketball Coach Greg Gard:
“Shawn brings the perfect combination of understanding what it means to be successful at Wisconsin while adding experience and wisdom from other top collegiate programs. He’s extremely bright and a man of great integrity and passion. He’ll be able to hit the ground running in Madison and guide us into the future of collegiate athletics.”
The Bottom Line
With Luke Fickell reshaping the football roster and the athletic department balancing the harsh financial realities of this new era, hiring a sitting COO from a powerhouse like Texas is an absolute home run.
Eichorst understands the “Wisconsin Way” and the specific developmental culture of the university, but he also brings the ruthless efficiency and modern execution of a top-tier SEC program. He knows how to build massive facility upgrades (having overseen a $600 million expansion at Nebraska), and he knows how to navigate major conference shifts.
The university will formally introduce Eichorst at an upcoming event at Camp Randall Stadium soon.
The era of a new leader in Madison has officially arrived.
