Russell Wilson named starting QB for the Giants ahead of the 2025 NFL season
The former Wisconsin signal caller has been named the starting QB for the New York Giants.

Former Wisconsin football quarterback Russell Wilson has enjoyed a successful 13-year career thus far, winning a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks in 2014. He has played for the Seahawks, Broncos, and most recently with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Now, entering year 14, Wilson will be playing for the New York Giants, after he signed on a one-year, $10.5 million deal this offseason.
When Wilson signed with the Giants, who are moving on from the Daniel Jones era, penciling him in as the starter for the 2025 season made sense. Wilson is just part of the overhaul for the Giants in the quarterback room in New York. They also signed Jameis Winston and then used valuable draft capital to trade back into the first round of this year’s NFL Draft to take Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart with the No. 25 pick.
The selection of Jaxson Dart in the first round brought on speculation of a potential quarterback battle in training camp ahead of the 2025 season. If Dart were to be named the starter, Wilson’s $10.5 million contract wouldn’t be all that crazy to pay to be a veteran backup.
But any potential speculation of a battle for the starting spot was put to bed quickly. Giants head coach Brian Daboll announced that Wilson is going to be the team’s starting quarterback, according to Jordan Raanan, a Giants reporter for ESPN.
"These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter,” Daboll told reporters.
In addition to being the starting quarterback, Wilson will also play the role of mentor for Dart, the future of the Giants’ franchise.
You never like to throw the term ‘lame duck’ around, but Wilson being on a one-year deal and Dart waiting in the wings, this is likely Wilson’s only season as a starter for the New York Giants.
