From Down Under to Madison: Aussie Guard Owen Foxwell Commits to Wisconsin Basketball
The "Australian pipeline" is officially open in Madison.
The Wisconsin Badgers have secured a backcourt commitment from Australian guard Owen Foxwell. After spending the last three seasons developing in the NBL (Australia’s professional basketball league) with the South East Melbourne Phoenix, Foxwell is making the jump to the Big Ten with multiple years of eligibility remaining.
The Commitment at a Glance
Player: Owen Foxwell
Position: Point Guard / Shooting Guard
Height/Weight: 6’2” / 185 lbs
Previous Team: South East Melbourne Phoenix (NBL)
Status: Committed to Wisconsin (Class of 2026) - Flipped from LSU
Why It Matters: Professional Polish
Foxwell isn’t your average “freshman” recruit. At 22 years old, he has been playing against grown men and former NBA players for years.
2025-26 Statline (NBL): 11.1 pts, 3 reb, 4.5 ast, 1.3 stl
The “Pest” Mentality: In the NBL, Foxwell earned a reputation as one of the league’s most annoying perimeter defenders. He has elite lateral quickness and a high basketball IQ, making him a perfect fit for Greg Gard’s defensive schemes.
Secondary Playmaking: While he can lead the break, his ability to play off-ball and make the “one more” pass is will work well with Wisconsin’s offense.
Proven Range: He’s a capable three-point shooter who understands how to find his spots within a structured system. In 28 games, Foxwell hit 37 threes, making 35% pf his attempts.
The Roster Impact: A Potential Double-Down?
Adding Owen Foxwell gives Greg Gard a “pro-ready” guard with the defensive grit required to survive in the Big Ten. However, the biggest ripple effect might not be on the court this season—it’s in the transfer portal.
Owen’s brother, Max Foxwell, is currently a standout guard at Portland. With Owen officially in the fold at Wisconsin, the smoke around Max entering the portal to join his brother in Madison is becoming impossible to ignore.
The Brother Connection: We’ve seen the power of “family ties” in college basketball recently. Bringing in both Foxwell brothers would give Wisconsin a backcourt with built-in chemistry and two different, yet complementary, styles of play.
A New Kind of Pipeline: While Wisconsin has traditionally recruited the Midwest, this move signals a pivot toward the “Australian Pipeline.” Foxwell is reportedly a former teammate and friend of current Wisconsin forward, Austin Rapp. With Rapp and Foxwell on the roster, the Badgers are positioning themselves as a serious destination for top-tier international talent looking for a high-major platform.
