The Badger Backer Roundup: Staff Shakeups, the Miller Commitment, and Hoops’ Bittersweet Senior Night
A look at Luke Fickell’s finalized 2026 coaching staff, Isaac Miller’s big in-state commitment, and the latest on Nolan Winter’s injury status.
The Wisconsin Badgers are entering a pivotal postseason stretch following a dominant 78-45 Senior Night victory over Maryland and a wave of strategic changes within the football program. While Braeden Carrington’s record-setting shooting has the Badgers trending toward a top-4 Big Ten seed, the status of big man Nolan Winter (ankle) remains the primary concern ahead of Saturday’s showdown at No. 15 Purdue.
Meanwhile, Luke Fickell has officially finalized his 2026 coaching staff with six key hires, and the "In-State Wall" continues to grow as 2027 edge rusher Isaac Miller chooses Madison over Miami and Notre Dame.
From Tyler Biadasz’s new $30M NFL deal to the latest recruiting scoops, here is everything you need to know in this week's Badger Backer Roundup.
1. Basketball: Senior Night Statement vs. Maryland
The Badgers closed out the Kohl Center regular-season slate with absolute authority on Wednesday, dismantling Maryland 78-45.
The Record-Breaker: After hitting nine threes against Washington last week, breaking a program record, Braeden Carrington stayed white-hot, leading all scorers with 18 points.
The “Gard” Moment: In a scene straight out of a movie, Greg Gard’s son, Isaac Gard, checked in for the final minutes and drained a logo three-pointer to cap off the night.
The Standings: With the win, Wisconsin (21-9, 13-6) is guaranteed a top-6 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. They head to Mackey Arena on Saturday to face No. 15 Purdue with a chance to jump to the No. 5 seed. They can get to No. 4 if they beat Purdue and Illinois loses to Maryland.
2. The Concern: Nolan Winter’s Ankle
The blowout win was overshadowed by a scary moment in the second half when star big man Nolan Winter went down with a left ankle injury.
The Postgame Update: The Kohl Center went silent as Winter was helped off without putting weight on the leg. However, Greg Gard provided a sigh of relief on Wednesday during his postgame presser, stating that early testing suggests they “avoided the worst.”
Status: Winter is officially day-to-day. While he may sit for the Purdue game to prep for the postseason, the long-term outlook for the Big Dance is optimistic.
3. NFL: Former Badgers on the Move
Multiple former Badgers will be on new teams next season. Former Rimington Trophy winner Tyler Biadasz has reportedly agreed to a 3-year, $30 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.
After being a surprise release by Washington, Biadasz didn’t stay on the market for 24 hours. He joins Jim Harbaugh in LA, where he’ll be the literal center of a revamped, power-running game.
Former Wisconsin fullback Alec Ingold will also be searching for a new team after being released by the Miami Dolphins. With the fullback position dying, there aren’t a ton of landing spots out there for Ingold.
4. Football: Fickell’s Staff Overhaul
Luke Fickell isn’t waiting for the spring game to make moves. Wisconsin officially announced a flurry of coaching hires and title changes this week.
Ari Confesor (WR Coach): Coming straight from the Jacksonville Jaguars (and previously Wake Forest), Confesor is the Badgers’ fifth WR coach in five years. He’s known as a technical specialist who can maximize the “twitchy” talent Fickell has recruited.
Cam Odom (Asst. WR Coach): Joining Confesor will be Cam Odom as an assistant wide receivers coach. Odom previously spent time with Georgia and Baylor.
Bob Ligashesky (Special Teams): A nearly 40-year veteran of the NFL and college ranks (most recently at Minnesota). This is a “proven commodity” hire to fix the consistency issues that plagued the third phase last year.
Tuf Borland (ILB Coach): After spending time on the staff as an assistant linebackers coach with the Badgers since 2023, Borland has been promoted to the inside linebackers coach. Borland has been a relentless recruiter for the Badgers defensively.
Chris Worley (Asst. DB Coach): Worley has been hired to oversee the nickel cornerbacks group. He has been on staff since 2023 as UW's director of player development and engagement.
Front Office: The Badgers also poached Darius Hicks from Michigan State to serve as Director of Scouting, further proof that Fickell is building an NFL-style front office in Madison.
5. Recruiting: Isaac Miller is Home
The Wisconsin coaching staff continues to rebuild the wall around the state of Wisconsin. With three 2027 in-state prospects already committed to the Badgers, Isaac Miller, the 6’5”, 250-pound edge rusher from Catholic Memorial, officially committed to the Badgers on Thursday.
The Impact: Miller chose UW over Miami, Notre Dame, and Iowa. He is the fourth in-state commit for the 2027 class, joining Korz Loken, Ethan McIntosh, and Miller’s high school teammate, Dustin Roach.
