'Ass': Fan reaction at halftime vs. Maryland
Wisconsin football fans give their thoughts on the Badgers after the first vs. Maryland
The Wisconsin football team came into its matchup today as 10.5-point favorites over the visiting Maryland Terrapins.
This was supposed to be one of the few winnable games on the Badgers’ schedule this year. After they started the season 2-0, there was some optimism that the Wisconsin football program was turning things around and showing some progress.
Then, they got their breaks beaten off by Alabama in Tuscaloosa, 38-15, in a game that didn’t even feel that close.
At least they could start conference play against one of the worst teams in the Big Ten, right?
Right?
The Badgers got starting QB Billy Edwards Back under center and looked good early, connecting on a 45-yard pass to Trech Kekahuna to set the Badgers up deep in Terrapin territory. That’s about where the good ended.
The drive promptly fizzled out and ended with a blocked field goal attempt.
The next possession, Edwards Jr. left the game after appearing to reaggravate his injury, paving the way for Danny O’Neil to come back in. While he made a few plays with his legs, he threw a bad pick that left the Terrapins on the Badgers’ doorstep, which resulted in a touchdown, giving Maryland a 7-0 lead.
Not long after, a Wisconsin punt was blocked, again, deep in Badger territory. The defense surrendered its second touchdown while backed up to start a drive.
A Maryland field goal with a few minutes left in the half put them up 17-0.
The Terrapins tacked on 3 more as time expired to go into the half 20-0. As the Badgers exited the field, they were greeted with loud boos and even louder ‘Fire Fickell’ chants.
Wisconsin totaled just 129 total yards in the first half, including just 34 yards on the ground, which was supposed to be the strength of the team under Jeff Grimes. Maryland, on the other hand, ended with 206 total yards, including 167 through the air.
The Badgers’ play prompted multiple ‘Fire Fickell’ chants by the student section that started to spread throughout the sparsely filled stadium.
I took to social media to gauge the temperature of how fans (outside of the stadium) felt about the team’s first-half performance. The replies are about what you’d expect.
