November 2022 will forever be remembered as the moment the Wisconsin football program decided to blow up its own blueprint.

Following the firing of Paul Chryst, interim head coach Jim Leonhard did exactly what everyone expected: he kept the locker room together, rallied the team, and, despite the rough start to the season, kept the Badgers’ bowl game streak alive.

He looked every bit the part of the program’s heir apparent. The players wanted him. The fans campaigned for him. It felt like a done deal.

Then, Athletic Director Chris McIntosh took a huge swing by hiring Luke Fickell instead of Leonhard.

Fickell was among the hottest coaching candidates around after leading Cincinnati to the College Football Playoff in 2021, making the Bearcats the first Group of 5 school to make the CFP.

But with Fickell came a change in identity. Wisconsin, which was known for primarily running the ball on offense, all of a sudden became an air-raid offense under offensive coordinator Phil Longo, whom Fickell hired to run it.

McIntosh chose a hard reset, bringing in an outside coach with no ties to the Wisconsin football program, essentially creating a fresh start.

Three seasons into the Fickell era, the fan base is deeply divided. The ‘Dairy Raid’ offense was a total disaster. After two seasons, Longo was fired and was replaced by Jeff Grimes, who brought more of a pro-style offense with him from Kansas to help the Badgers get back to their roots: running the football.

After a brutal 2025 schedule mixed with an offense in the middle of a transition, the Badgers failed to make a bowl game for the second year in a row. Definitely not what Wisconsin football fans expected when Fickell was named the head coach.

So, that begs the question:

What if McIntosh had played it safe, listened to the locker room, and given the permanent job to the native son, Jim Leonhard?

The 2023 Transition: Continuity Over Chaos

If Leonhard is named the permanent head coach in late 2022, the immediate roster gutting of the transfer portal era looks vastly different. Fickell’s arrival triggered an immediate culture clash, causing traditional Wisconsin-style players to exit while bringing in dozens of transfers to fit an entirely new scheme.

Under Leonhard, continuity rules. There is no Phil Longo. There is no Air Raid transition. Leonhard retains a defensive-minded staff and hires a modern, yet power-focused offensive coordinator—someone committed to utilizing fullbacks and tight ends while implementing modern play-action concepts.

In 2023, instead of an awkward offensive identity crisis that left running back Braelon Allen frustrated in shotgun formations, the Badgers double down on their strengths. Leonhard’s defense remains a top-10 unit nationally, suffocating Big Ten West opponents.

The Badgers win the final iteration of the Big Ten West not with flash, but with the classic, brutal formula that defined the program for three decades.

The Super-Conference Reality Check (2024–2025)

The true test of the Leonhard timeline arrives in 2024 and 2025, when the Big Ten expands into a coast-to-coast super-conference, welcoming USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington.

In our reality, Fickell’s 2025 season was a painful watch. The Badgers struggled heavily against elite conference opponents, and the constant shuffling of offensive staff left fans questioning the long-term vision.

In the Leonhard timeline, the 2025 season is equally difficult, but for entirely different reasons. Leonhard’s teams are disciplined, tough, and rarely beat themselves. They don’t suffer the embarrassing blowout losses or the internal schematic friction that we’ve seen recently.

However, without Fickell’s national recruiting gravity, Leonhard faces a severe talent-ceiling issue. While his defense keeps Wisconsin competitive in every game, the old-school offense struggles to score enough points to keep pace with the high-flying offenses of Oregon or Ohio State.

Wisconsin Hits a Homerun in Monster First Official Visit Weekend

In the first weekend, the Badgers hosted all 13 of their committed players, giving the staff some extra help recruiting, and it paid off handsomely. The Badgers came away from the first weekend with four new commitments.

Four-star receiver Jai Jones kicked things off, announcing his commitment to the Badgers before the weekend even finished. Jones’ pledge gave Wisconsin its first receiver in an already impressive class.

Following Jones’ commitment came the additions of cornerback Royalton Allen and linebacker Nathan Jones, both premium defensive players at major positions of need.

Landing Jai Jones this early is about more than just one player; it’s about momentum.

By locking in a 4-star receiver like Jones alongside current 2027 commits like Korz Loken, Kingson Allen, and Jack Sorgi, Wisconsin is effectively building its “core” three years in advance. This allows the coaching staff to be incredibly selective with the rest of the class.

Why this fits: Jeff Grimes wants an offense that is physical in the run game but explosive through the air. You can’t have the latter without guys who can win 50/50 balls on the outside. Jai Jones is that guy.

The Bottom Line: The “Wisconsin Way” is evolving. The Badgers aren’t just looking for “diamonds in the rough” anymore—they are going head-to-head with the big boys for elite, early-cycle talent. And with Jai Jones in the fold, they’re winning.

The Badgers aren’t just heading to any regional; they are heading to the backyard of the No. 2 national seed, the Texas Longhorns.

Fresh off leading the Wisconsin Badgers to a third consecutive Rose Bowl appearance, Bret Bielema abruptly packed his bags and left Madison for the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The official narrative was that Bielema wanted to test his mettle in the mighty SEC. But the worst-kept secret in college football was the underlying financial tension: Bielema was less than pleased that the Wisconsin administration refused to open up the UW checkbook to pay SEC-level salaries for top-tier assistant coaches.

Bielema bolted, Gary Andersen arrived for a bizarre two-year fever dream, and Paul Chryst eventually restored order.

But what if Bielema got the resources he desired? A raise to make him among the highest-paid coaches in the Big Ten and a healthy salary pool for assistants to keep his coaches from bolting for higher-paying positions?

If Bielema stays, the disastrous “identity crisis” of the Gary Andersen era never happens. Andersen famously tried to awkwardly wedge a spread-offense philosophy into a roster built for power football. Armed with a competitive salary pool, Bielema doesn’t just keep his staff; he upgrades it. He successfully recruits elite offensive and defensive coordinators who previously would have bounced for bigger paydays.

The 2014 Peak: A Heisman for Melvin Gordon and a Gritty Title Fight

This is where the timeline truly fractures. In reality, the 2014 Badgers went 10-2 under Andersen before being humiliatingly annihilated 59-0 by Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship.

The Wisconsin Badgers secured a commitment from JUCO running back Julius Pope, adding a versatile and explosive weapon to their 2026 recruiting class. In an era where the transfer portal dominates the headlines, finding a hidden gem in the JUCO ranks can be a nice piece for the Badgers’ running back room. And as we saw last few seasons, running back is a position that you can never have too much depth.

Here is a deep dive into who Julius Pope is, what he brings to Madison, and how he fits into the Badgers’ offensive scheme.

The Background: From SEC Commit to the JUCO Ranks

If the name Julius Pope sounds familiar to recruiting junkies, it should. Pope was a highly touted prospect coming out of South Panola High School in Batesville, Mississippi, for the 2024 recruiting cycle. A true SEC-caliber talent, Pope originally committed to and signed with Sam Pittman and the Arkansas Razorbacks out of high school.

The Profile: Power Meets Versatility

According to his 247Sports profile, Pope brings a fantastic, ready-to-play physical frame to the table. He isn’t a developmental prospect who needs a year in the weight room. He already has the build to play in the physical Big Ten.

When you turn on his JUCO tape, three distinct traits jump off the screen:

1. Contact Balance: Pope does not go down on first contact. Because of his background playing linebacker, he runs with an incredibly low center of gravity. He routinely bounces off arm tackles and falls forward for an extra two or three yards at the end of his runs.

2. Burst Through the Hole: In the Badgers’ current offensive scheme, running backs need to read the leverage of the offensive linemen and decisively plant their foot in the ground. Pope is a one-cut-and-go runner. He doesn’t dance in the backfield.

Luke Fickell and the Wisconsin football coaching staff just checked a major box off their 2027 recruiting to-do list.

3-star defensive lineman Will Zaccagnino officially announced his commitment to the Wisconsin Badgers. The standout defensive trench-warrior out of St. Joseph High School in Trumbull, Connecticut, becomes the 11th commitment in a rapidly growing 2027 recruiting class.

Zaccagnino chose the Badgers over an offer sheet that featured 14 Division I programs, fending off heavy interest from Michigan State, Missouri, Syracuse, and his home-state UConn Huskies.

The Luke Fickell era has been a disappointment thus far. Three years into his tenure as the head coach of the Wisconsin football program, the Badgers have vastly fallen below expectations.

One particular area of disappointment has been the program’s inability to develop NFL talent. Over the past 20 years, there have always been at least one or two Badgers taken in the first few rounds of the draft and a handful of other players taken in the later rounds. Now, the ‘top’ players on the roster, like Jack Nelson and Hunter Wohler, were barely even 7th-round picks in 2025.

It looked like it was going to be more of the same late-round waiting game this season. Mason Reiger, who played just one season with the Badgers after transferring in from Louisville, looked like he was a near lock to be taken on Day 3, and maybe Vinny Anthony or Lance Mason could sneak in late in the final round.

The rounds ticked away on the third day. Round four, five, six, and finally, the seventh and final round came and went. Not one Badger was drafted.

For the first time since 1978, the Wisconsin football program didn’t get a single player selected.

While it may seem like getting players drafted into the NFL is a secondary or even tertiary goal of a college football program, you have to think that it has a big effect on recruiting. Not only have the Badgers struggled to win games, but if you can’t get players drafted into the NFL, prospects aren’t going to want to go to Wisconsin.

Obviously, if a player is good enough, they’ll get drafted. But if they can go to a program that consistently puts a player at their position into the pros, and the Badgers can’t, it makes it that much harder to convince a recruit to play for the Wisconsin football program.

On the other hand, Fickell and his staff have a really nice start on their 2027 class, which already has a handful of four-star prospects, but can they take that potential and turn them into NFL-caliber players?

There is mounting pressure on this staff to win games and lock down in-state recruiting, but they also need to restore the pro pipeline we have grown so accustomed to over the decades.

It was a pretty disappointing feeling watching the draft this weekend, waiting to hear a Wisconsin Badger called, only to make it all the way to the final pick without hearing a single one.

When head coach John Erickson left Wisconsin in 1968 to become the first general manager of the expansion Milwaukee Bucks, the UW Athletic Board targeted a 27-year-old “boy wonder” coaching at Army. His name was Bob Knight.

In our reality, Knight interviewed in Madison, blew away the brass, and accepted the job. But before the official announcement, someone leaked the hiring to the press. A fiercely principled, and stubborn, Knight was infuriated by the breach of trust and immediately withdrew his name.

Wisconsin panicked, eventually promoting assistant John Powless (who was also the UW tennis coach), while Knight went to Indiana in 1971 and won three national titles.
