Photo via UW Athletics

For the first time since 2022, the “Motion W” will be flying in the NCAA Softball Tournament.

On Sunday night, the Wisconsin Badgers (32-19) officially punched their ticket to the postseason, earning an at-large bid to the Austin Regional. This marks the 10th tournament appearance in program history and the eighth under head coach Yvette Healy.

While the Badgers fell just short in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, their regular-season resume—headlined by a 30-win campaign and a signature upset over No. 11 Oregon—was more than enough to impress the committee.

Here is everything you need to know about the Badgers’ path to Oklahoma City.

Subscribe now

The Regional Landscape: Austin, Texas

The Badgers aren’t just heading to any regional; they are heading to the backyard of the No. 2 national seed, the Texas Longhorns.

The Field: (2) Texas, Wisconsin, Baylor, Wagner.

The First Test: Wisconsin vs. Baylor

When: Friday, May 15 | 1:30 PM ET

Watch: ESPN+

The Badgers enter the regional as the No. 2 seed in the four-team pod. Their opening opponent, Baylor (28-26), is a familiar but distant foe. Wisconsin is 2-0 all-time against the Bears, though they haven’t met on the diamond since 2002.

The “400 Club”: Wisconsin’s Triple Threat

If Wisconsin is going to play spoiler in Austin, it will be on the backs of their historically elite hitting. Most teams would love to have a player flirt with a .400 batting average; the Badgers currently have three.

Emily Bojan (.402): The senior leader who sets the tone at the top of the order.

Kendra Lewis (.402): A model of consistency and a nightmare for opposing pitchers to strike out.

Danielle Lucey (.400): The spark plug with 22 RBIs and elite speed on the paths.

Combine that trio with Hilary Blomberg, who leads the team with 31 RBIs and 8 home runs, and you have a lineup that can hurt you in a dozen different ways. In a double-elimination format, this level of offensive depth is exactly what you need to survive a long weekend.

The “What If” Factor: Austin Magic?

For the superstitious Badger fans, there is some history to lean on here. The last time the Badgers played in Austin was during the 2023 Bevo Classic. In that tournament, Wisconsin pulled off a stunning 7-6 upset over No. 9 Alabama.

They know the dirt at McCombs Field. They know how to win as underdogs in that environment.

The Path Forward

If the Badgers handle business against Baylor on Friday, they will likely face a collision course with the hosting Texas Longhorns on Saturday. Texas is one of the favorites to win the entire Women’s College World Series, but as we saw in the Big Ten Tournament against Oregon, this Badger team thrives when the lights are brightest.

The Badger Backer Take
This season already feels like a massive win for Yvette Healy, proving that the program’s developmental pipeline is still good. But with this senior class and these hitting stats? Don’t be surprised if they make things very uncomfortable for the Longhorns this weekend.

It means a lot to have you here at The Badger Backer. Bowl appearance, Bret Bielema abruptly packed his bags and left Madison for the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The official narrative was that Bielema wanted to test his mettle in the mighty SEC. But the worst-kept secret in college football was the underlying financial tension: Bielema was less than pleased that the Wisconsin administration refused to open up the UW checkbook to pay SEC-level salaries for top-tier assistant coaches.

Bielema bolted, Gary Andersen arrived for a bizarre two-year fever dream, and Paul Chryst eventually restored order.

But what if Bielema got the resources he desired? A raise to make him among the highest-paid coaches in the Big Ten and a healthy salary pool for assistants to keep his coaches from bolting for higher-paying positions?

The 2013 Continuity and the Death of the Spread Experiment

If Bielema stays, the disastrous “identity crisis” of the Gary Andersen era never happens. Andersen famously tried to awkwardly wedge a spread-offense philosophy into a roster built for power football. Under Bielema, the identity remains brutally clear: massive offensive linemen, heavy formations, and imposing physical dominance.

Armed with a competitive salary pool, Bielema doesn’t just keep his staff; he upgrades it. He successfully recruits elite offensive and defensive coordinators who previously would have bounced for bigger paydays.

The 2014 Peak: A Heisman for Melvin Gordon and a Gritty Title In reality, the 2014 Badgers went 10-2 under Andersen before being humiliatingly annihilated 59-0 by Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship.

If Bielema is on the sidelines, that 59-0 massacre never happens. Bielema’s bruising, ball-control offense limits possessions, shortens the game, and keeps Urban Meyer’s third-string quarterback, Cardale Jones, off the field. More importantly, Bielema feeds Melvin Gordon relentlessly in a system perfectly tailored for his historic 2,587-yard season.

While the Badgers don’t quite pull off the upset, ultimately falling to the Buckeyes, Gordon has a solid game, giving him the final push he needs to edge out Marcus Mariota and win the 2014 Heisman Trophy.

A Heisman trophy and a competitive Big Ten title fight are just the beginning. Julius Pope, adding a versatile and explosive weapon to their 2026 recruiting class. In an era where the transfer portal dominates the headlines, finding a hidden gem in the JUCO ranks can be a nice piece for the Badgers’ running back room. And as we saw last few seasons, running back is a position that you can never have too much depth.

Here is a deep dive into who Julius Pope is, what he brings to Madison, and how he fits into the Badgers’ offensive scheme.

The Badger Backer is a reader-supported publication. Pope was a highly touted prospect coming out of South Panola High School in Batesville, Mississippi, for the 2024 recruiting cycle. A true SEC-caliber talent, Pope originally committed to and signed with Sam Pittman and the Arkansas Razorbacks out of high school.

Known for being an absolute Swiss Army Knife at South Panola, Pope was heavily recruited as an “Athlete” who could play both sides of the ball, logging elite snaps as both a linebacker and a ball carrier.

After taking the JUCO route to hone in on the offensive side of the football and get his path back to the Power 4 level, Pope has completely transformed himself into a dedicated, bruising running back. That defensive background, however, still shows up in the way he runs the football: he seeks out contact, drops his pads with violence, and understands defensive pursuit angles better than most natural offensive players.

The Profile: Power Meets Versatility

According to his 247Sports profile, Pope brings a fantastic, ready-to-play physical frame to the table. He isn’t a developmental prospect who needs a year in the weight room. He already has the build to play in the physical Big Ten.

When you turn on his JUCO tape, three distinct traits jump off the screen:

Contact Balance: Pope does not go down on first contact. Because of his background playing linebacker, he runs with an incredibly low center of gravity. He routinely bounces off arm tackles and falls forward for an extra two or three yards at the end of his runs.

Burst Through the Hole: In the Badgers’ current offensive scheme, running backs need to read the leverage of the offensive linemen and decisively plant their foot in the ground. Pope is a one-cut-and-go runner. He doesn’t dance in the backfield.

Pass-Catching Ability: This is the X-factor. Because Pope is a natural athlete, he has incredibly soft hands out of the backfield. He isn’t just a screen-pass threat; he can line up in the slot or run angle routes over the middle of the field, creating a matchup nightmare for opposing linebackers.

How He Fits in Madison

Adding a JUCO running back is a strategic roster-management move by Luke Fickell and the offensive staff. High school running backs (even 4-star prospects) often need time to learn the nuances of pass protection and adjust to the speed of college linebackers. Pope bypasses that learning curve.

Wisconsin’s offense relies heavily on having a two-headed monster in the backfield to keep fresh legs deep into the fourth quarter. Pope brings a veteran presence and an immediate injection of physicality to the depth chart. He is perfectly suited to execute the inside zone and wide zone rushing concepts that the Badgers lean on, and his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield means the offense won’t have to sub him out on 3rd-and-long.

With Pope now officially in the fold, the Badgers have secured a battle-tested weapon who will look right at home wearing the Motion W next fall.

Pope will have three years of eligibility remaining entering the 2026 season.

It means a lot to have you here at The Badger Backer. According to the 247Sports Composite, he is ranked as the No. 90 defensive lineman in the country and a top-30 player in the state of Illinois for the 2027 cycle.

What makes Hill’s profile particularly exciting is his athletic background. He isn’t just a big body; he is a multi-sport athlete who competes in both baseball and wrestling. For defensive tackles, a wrestling background is pure gold—it translates to elite leverage, hand fighting, and core balance, allowing him to anchor against double-teams and manipulate offensive centers.

How He Fits in Madison

In our recent deep dive dissecting the 2027 class, we highlighted the desperate need for 300-plus-pound space-eaters on the interior defensive line. Defensive line coach E.J. Whitlow has been tasked with beefing up the front to clog rushing lanes and keep the linebackers clean in Mike Tressel’s defensive scheme.

Hill is the exact answer to that need. He projects as a prototypical nose tackle who can anchor the center of the defense. Where a guy like Zaccagnino brings length and positional versatility on the edge, Hill brings pure, immovable mass right up the middle.

With Hill now in the fold, the Badgers boast 12 commitments and have successfully begun turning a glaring roster weakness into a sudden strength in the 2027 cycle.

It means a lot to have you here at The Badger Backer. Three years into his tenure as the head coach of the Wisconsin football program, the Badgers have vastly fallen below expectations.

One particular area of disappointment has been the program’s inability to develop NFL talent. Over the past 20 years, there have always been at least one or two Badgers taken in the first few rounds of the draft and a handful of other players taken in the later rounds. Now, the ‘top’ players on the roster, like Jack Nelson and Hunter Wohler, were barely even 7th-round picks in 2025.

Subscribe now

It looked like it was going to be more of the same late-round waiting game this season. Mason Reiger, who played just one season with the Badgers after transferring in from Louisville, looked like he was a near lock to be taken on Day 3, and maybe Vinny Anthony or Lance Mason could sneak in late in the final round.

The rounds ticked away on the third day. Round four, five, six, and finally, the seventh and final round came and went. Not one Badger was drafted.

For the first time since 1978, the Wisconsin football program didn’t get a single player selected.

While it may seem like getting players drafted into the NFL is a secondary or even tertiary goal of a college football program, you have to think that it has a big effect on recruiting. Not only have the Badgers struggled to win games, but if you can’t get players drafted into the NFL, prospects aren’t going to want to go to Wisconsin.

Obviously, if a player is good enough, they’ll get drafted. But if they can go to a program that consistently puts a player at their position into the pros, and the Badgers can’t, it makes it that much harder to convince a recruit to play for the Wisconsin football program.

On the other hand, Fickell and his staff have a really nice start on their 2027 class, which already has a handful of four-star prospects, but can they take that potential and turn them into NFL-caliber players?

There is mounting pressure on this staff to win games and lock down in-state recruiting, but they also need to restore the pro pipeline we have grown so accustomed to over the decades.

It was a pretty disappointing feeling watching the draft this weekend, waiting to hear a Wisconsin Badger called, only to make it all the way to the final pick without hearing a single one.

It means a lot to have you here at The Badger Backer. executed its plan to near perfection. The Badgers’ 2027 class currently features nine commitments and sits inside the Top 20 nationally (via 247Sports and On3 composite rankings). Eight of those nine players hail from Wisconsin, and the lone out-of-stater just so happens to be the son of a Badger legend.

Let’s take a deep dive into the class as it stands today, breaking down what each player brings to Madison, how they fit into the staff’s vision, and what the Badgers still need to target.

After weeks of evaluating, hosting visits, and navigating the chaotic waters of the transfer portal, Greg Gard and the Wisconsin Badgers have landed their first prize of the 2026 cycle.

Trey Autry, a 6’4” guard who spent the last three seasons steadily improving for George Washington in the Atlantic 10, has officially committed to Wisconsin.

This is a critical first domino to fall for a Badger program looking to reload its backcourt after John Blackwell’s departure. Autry brings size, high-level shot-making, and a massive basketball IQ to Madison. Let’s dive into the numbers, his career arc, and exactly what the Badgers are getting in their newest guard.

The Deep Dive: 2025-26 Season & Career Stats

Autry blossomed into a highly reliable offensive weapon during his junior season in the A-10. He went from being a solid rotational piece as a freshman (5.4 PPG) to a full-time starter and focal point on the scouting report.

Here is what his production looked like during his 2025-26 campaign at George Washington:

Points Per Game: 11.0

Rebounds Per Game: 3.5

3-Point Percentage: 38.5% on high volume (6.4 attempts per game)

Free Throw Percentage: 81.0%

Career Arc & Progression: Autry’s career has been a steady, upward climb. Over his 100 career games, he transformed from a spot-up threat into a guy who can navigate screens, space the floor, and hit timely jumpers.

The most encouraging stat for Badger fans? He shot nearly 40% from deep while taking over six threes a game last year. He isn’t just taking wide-open looks; he’s hitting them with defenders closing out.

The Fit: Why Autry Makes Sense for Wisconsin

<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://x.com/BadgerMBB/status/2045170475890774213","full_text":"Welcome to Wisconsin, Trey Autry!\n\nThe 6-4 guard brings 3 years of experience to our backcourt.\n\n🔗 go.wisc.edu/autry ","username":"BadgerMBB","name":"Wisconsin Basketball","profile_image_url":"https://pbs.substack.com/profile_images/2031415963225079808/muN0yLE6_normal.jpg","date":"2026-04-17T16:00:13.000Z","photos":[{"img_url":"https://pbs.substack.com/media/HGHjUzBWsAA39HX.jpg","link_url":"https://t.co/9yTNDCQntt"},{"img_url":"https://pbs.substack.com/media/HGHjWBTX0AAAeT-.jpg","link_url":"https://t.co/9yTNDCQntt"}],"quoted_tweet":{},"reply_count":0,"retweet_count":18,"like_count":83,"impression_count":2939,"expanded_url":null,"video_url":null,"belowTheFold":true}" data-component-name="Twitter2ToDOM">

This photo was generated using AI.

As Wisconsin Badgers fans, our history is defined by Bo Ryan’s steady dominance and the grit of the modern era. But if you rewind the clock to the spring of 1968, the entire landscape of college basketball almost shifted on its axis—and Madison was meant to be ground zero.

When head coach John Erickson left Wisconsin in 1968 to become the first general manager of the expansion Milwaukee Bucks, the UW Athletic Board targeted a 27-year-old “boy wonder” coaching at Army. His name was Bob Knight.

In our reality, Knight interviewed in Madison, blew away the brass, and accepted the job. But before the official announcement, someone leaked the hiring to the press. A fiercely principled, and stubborn, Knight was infuriated by the breach of trust and immediately withdrew his name.

Wisconsin panicked, eventually promoting assistant John Powless (who was also the UW tennis coach), while Knight went to Indiana in 1971 and won three national titles.

But what if that leak was plugged? What if Knight actually ended up in Madison?

The Scene: Late-60s Madison Meets Military Discipline

Knight’s arrival in Madison for the 1968-1969 season sets up one of the most fascinating cultural contrasts in sports history. The UW campus in the late 60s and early 70s is the Midwestern epicenter of anti-war protests and the counterculture movement. Into this volatile environment steps a rigid, fiery disciplinarian fresh out of West Point.

Instead of giving into the outside pressure, Knight uses it. He builds a “fortress mentality” within the locker room. It’s the Badgers against the world. Knight implements his legendary Motion Offense and suffocating man-to-man defense three years earlier than he did in reality. The UW Field House, rather than Assembly Hall, becomes the most terrifying venue in the Big Ten.

Three national titles would be incredible, but the butterfly effect of Bob Knight staying in Madison changes the entire landscape of modern college basketball. Upgrade to a paid subscription below to unlock the massive ripple effects that rewrite the legacies of Coach K, Indiana University, and Bo Ryan.

The search for a permanent replacement will be led by future interim Chancellor Eric Wilcots.

2. 🏈 Football: Trench Warfare & High-Level Visitors

While the front office is in flux, Luke Fickell’s staff is busy hosting elite talent during spring ball.

Cameron Wagner on Campus: The Badgers hosted 4-star 2027 offensive tackle Cameron Wagner (St. Joseph, IL) at practice this past Saturday. Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 305 pounds, Wagner is a top-15 tackle nationally. Securing an unofficial visit from an out-of-state blue-chipper of his caliber is a massive win for OL coach Eric Mateos.

Spring Vibes: The energy at the Camp Randall remains high as the team works through its second week post-spring break. practice on the Camp Randall turn this morning.

After having a ‘lighter’ practice in the McClain Center on Tuesday, the Badgers were back in full pads on Thursday and those pads were popping. There was plenty of 11-on-11 today and I got a better look at where the offensive and defensive lines were.

Here is my notebook from today’s practice.

The Big Takeaway: Defensive Dominance

The defense won the day, plain and simple. The secondary was athletic, physical, and made nothing easy for the receiving corps, while the defensive front lived in the backfield. The offensive line has a long way to go to gel. They surrendered multiple “sacks” (played through) and bad snaps that would have killed drives before they even started.

It will take time for this revamped offensive unit to find its rhythm against a defense playing with this much swagger.

Subscribe now

Football: Spring Practice No. 5 Notes

After a week off for spring break, the Badgers returned to the McClain Center on Tuesday morning. The team practiced with just helmets on, and while the pads weren’t popping, the storylines certainly were.

Work in Progress: The overarching theme from Practice No. 5 was that the offense remains a “work in progress.” With 34 newcomers this season, the timing and chemistry aren’t there yet. As is typical in April, the defense is currently a step ahead.

Quarterback Watch: Colton Joseph (Old Dominion transfer), as expected, took the first-team reps. His mobility is undeniable, but the focus remains on his ability to operate Jeff Grimes’ system within the pocket. He showed a strong early connection with transfer wideout Jaylon Domingeaux and Tyrell Henry.

Deuce Adams (Louisville transfer) surprised me as well. He moved a lot better than I thought he would, showing a nice fit with the offense. He was able to navigate collapsing pockets and make some plays, whether he made a nice throw on the run or tucked the ball and gained what he could on the ground.

Defensive Standouts: It was hard to take a whole lot away from an unpadded practice, but two players that caught my eye on the defensive side of the ball were Nicolas Clayton and Jon Jon Kamara. Both players were consistently in the backfield, putting themselves in a position to force negative plays for the offense.

3. Fickell and Joseph Speak with the Media

The Badgers returned from spring break on Tuesday for their fifth session. While the offense is still finding its rhythm with 34 new faces, the post-practice presser provided some high-level insight into the locker room’s mindset.

Fickell on Joseph: "There’s a natural tightness when you’re a guy with high expectations joining a new team," Fickell said. "Each day, we’re seeing him become a little more loose." Fickell emphasized that he’s looking for Joseph to transition from "learning" the offense to "leading" it.

Turning the Page: When asked about the program’s recent struggles (a combined 9-15 record over the last two seasons), Joseph was direct about the “clean slate” mentality required to lead this team.

“I don’t really like to think about what happens in the past. That already happened. I’m really here to show what I can do in the future and show what we’re building towards.”

The most intriguing storyline of the week is why Old Dominion transfer Colton Joseph chose Madison. It turns out, his eyes were on the NFL draft boards from a few years ago.

The BYU Connection: Joseph admitted that his decision to join Wisconsin was heavily influenced by offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes. During his visit with Wisconsin, Grimes showed Joseph tape of Zach Wilson during his 2020 season at BYU (where Grimes was the OC), and sold him on what the Old Dominion transfer could accomplish in the offense with the Badgers.

The Vision: Joseph noted that seeing Wilson’s explosive, dual-threat success in Grimes’ system—which led to Wilson being the No. 2 overall NFL draft pick—was the ultimate selling point. “I saw some of the things [Wilson] was doing,” Joseph said. “I thought, ‘Man, if I could get in that offense, I could probably do those things, too.’”

4. Football Recruiting: A High-Upside Offer in Michigan

The “In-State Wall” is built for 2027, so the staff is now looking to the neighboring state of Michigan to bolster the defensive line.

Drew Aagesen Offered: Wisconsin became the first Big Ten program to officially offer 2027 3-star DL Drew Aagesen (Goodrich, MI).

The Profile: At 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, Aagesen is a backfield menace. His junior season stats are eye-popping: 21 tackles for loss and 11 sacks.

Strategic Move: By offering now during Aagesen’s unofficial spring visit, DL coach E.J. Whitlow has positioned the Badgers as the early front-runner before the Michigan and Michigan State offers inevitably arrive.

You can read more on Aagesen and the Badgers’ offer here.

The Final Take

The Bieliauskas news was a bit of a surprise, but Greg Gard has shown he can rebuild a roster in the transfer portal era with limited resources.

The football program finally feels like it has a quarterback who isn’t just “managing” a system—he’s trying to weaponize it. If Colton Joseph can replicate even a fraction of that “Zach Wilson at BYU” magic, the Big Ten better look out.

It means a lot to have you here at The Badger Backer. We knew the modern era of college basketball was volatile, but this one cuts straight to the bone.

Guard John Blackwell has officially entered the transfer portal.

Just as the backcourt puzzle for next season was coming together with the addition of Aussie guard Owen Foxwell, college basketball reminded us how cruel the offseason can be. Blackwell wasn’t just a rotation piece; he was widely considered the future emotional bellwether of this program.
<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://x.com/TravisBranham_/status/2041156202269147549","full_text":"Wisconsin guard John Blackwell is entering the transfer portal and the 2026 NBA Draft, per @jeffborzello.\n\nFive-star portal entry.\n247sports.com/player/john-bl… ","username":"TravisBranham_","name":"Travis Branham","profile_image_url":"https://pbs.substack.com/profile_images/1644347935465910272/v9VOR8nT_normal.jpg","date":"2026-04-06T14:08:56.000Z","photos":[{"img_url":"https://pbs.substack.com/media/HFOkrp0W0AApZJh.jpg","link_url":"https://t.co/aJ6lZWuSzM"}],"quoted_tweet":{},"reply_count":4,"retweet_count":10,"like_count":28,"impression_count":15334,"expanded_url":null,"video_url":null,"belowTheFold":false}" data-component-name="Twitter2ToDOM">

The Scouting Report: Why This Hurts So Much

Replacing Blackwell isn’t as simple as just grabbing a high-scoring guard from the portal. Blackwell possessed a highly specific, ultra-efficient playing style that made Greg Gard’s system hum:

Relentless Rim Pressure: In a half-court offense that can sometimes get stagnant, Blackwell was the master of the “paint touch.” He used his stout 198-pound frame to initiate contact, shoot over 82% from the charity stripe, and manufacture points out of thin air when the shot clock wound down.

An Analytics Darling: Blackwell didn’t hunt empty stats. During his breakout freshman year, he was a lethal spot-up shooter, connecting on a staggering 45.5% of his attempts from beyond the arc. Defenses couldn’t help off him, and they couldn’t stop him from getting to the rim.

The Defensive Identity: Blackwell guarded with a visible chip on his shoulder. Whether he was checking elite opposing point guards or fighting for rebounds against Big Ten power forwards, his 3.2 boards per game in limited minutes proved he was a willing brawler.

Where Do the Badgers Go From Here?

With Blackwell in the portal, Greg Gard’s backcourt plans change dramatically. While the commitment of Owen Foxwell helps soften the blow regarding pure guard depth, the Badgers now have a glaring, physical void at the off-guard spot.

Wisconsin still has open scholarships and will undoubtedly pivot hard to the transfer portal to find a physical, downhill playmaker who can replicate Blackwell’s defensive edge and free-throw generation

The Blueprint: 4 Specific Portal Targets to Replace Blackwell

Here is everything you need to know in today’s Badger Backer Roundup.

1. 🏈 Football: The “In-State Wall” Stands Tall

If there were any doubts about Luke Fickell’s mission to own the state of Wisconsin, this week silenced them. The Badgers are putting a literal fence around the state for the class of 2027.

The Mallinger Connection: In a massive “double-dip” for the program, twin offensive linemen Hunter and Reece Mallinger (Sussex Hamilton) officially committed to the Badgers on Wednesday. Standing 6-foot-6 and nearly 290 pounds, the duo adds elite “homegrown beef” to a 2027 class that already features 4-star OT Cole Reiter and 3-star OT Ethan McIntosh.

Kingston Allen Commits: In a massive Friday "Boom" for the program, 4-star running back Kingston Allen (Green Bay Notre Dame) officially committed to the Badgers. Allen is coming off a junior season for the record books, setting a WIAA single-season record with 3,436 rushing yards and 57 touchdowns. He chose Wisconsin over Northwestern and Iowa, solidifying his place as the next great homegrown "RBU" anchor.

The Sweep: With Allen and the Mallingers committed, Wisconsin now has eight commitments for 2027—and all eight are from the state of Wisconsin. Fickell has now secured eight of the top 10 players in the state, catapulting the Badgers' 2027 class into the Top 10 nationally.

2. 🏀 Basketball: Offseason Chess Moves

With the transfer portal officially open, Greg Gard’s staff is balancing immediate roster needs with a very aggressive approach to local high school talent.

Gard Flips an Aussie: Gard quietly added another Australian basketball player to the Badgers’ 2026 roster Friday night after flipping Owen Foxwell from LSU. The 22-year-old ‘freshman’ will join the Wisconsin basketball team with plenty of experience after playing in the NBL for multiple seasons.

Offer to Mr. Basketball: The Badgers officially extended a scholarship offer this week to 2026 Mr. Basketball Zavier Zens. The in-state star is scheduled to take an official visit to Madison on April 13. While UW already has two guards committed for 2026, Zens’ explosive scoring ability makes him a “must-take” prospect.

Portal Priorities: Retention remains the name of the game. While Austin Rapp has already confirmed his return, the staff is heavily scouring the portal for an experienced point guard to replace departing senior Nick Boyd.

WBIT Wrap-Up: A huge tip of the cap to Robin Pingeton and the women’s team. Their postseason run ended in a hard-fought Quarterfinal loss to Columbia, but the momentum gained from upset wins over programs like Miami has the Kohl Center buzzing about the program’s trajectory.

3. 🏥 UW Health Makes History with Women’s Sports

In a landmark move, UW Health has signed on as the first-ever jersey sponsor dedicated exclusively to Wisconsin’s women’s programs.

The Details: Starting in the 2026-27 season, the UW Health logo will appear as a jersey patch on both home and away uniforms for Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Hockey, and Softball.

A “First-of-its-Kind” Deal: This is the first jersey sponsorship in the country dedicated solely to women’s collegiate athletics. Athletic Director Chris McIntosh noted that the partnership “sends a clear message” about the university’s commitment to the future of women’s sports in Madison.

4. 🥎 Diamond Notes

Softball Resilience: The Badgers continue to grind through the Big Ten slate. After a gritty series win at Penn State, the focus shifts to a heavy home schedule through April, where Emily Bojan looks to extend her impressive on-base streak.

Winning Streak: The Badgers stand 20-11 on the season and are currently on a 5-game winning streak as they continue their series with the Purdue Boilermakers.

It means a lot to have you here at The Badger Backer. Bringing in both Foxwell brothers would give Wisconsin a backcourt with built-in chemistry and two different, yet complementary, styles of play.

A New Kind of Pipeline: While Wisconsin has traditionally recruited the Midwest, this move signals a pivot toward the “Australian Pipeline.” Foxwell is reportedly a former teammate and friend of current Wisconsin forward, Austin Rapp. With Rapp and Foxwell on the roster, the Badgers are positioning themselves as a serious destination for top-tier international talent looking for a high-major platform.

As a guy who just likes to write and talk about the Badgers, I truly appreciate you subscribing!
